A Brief History of Ashley’s Photography

A History: Since she was 15 years old, Ashley has navigated her camera to guide her into uncharted places and spaces. She maps out shapes and shadows and turns light into something tangible and beautiful. Photography is a journey from the blackness and abstractness of “being inside” a viewfinder to the brightness and beauty of color and form in a book, magazine, on a printed page, or advertisement.

Ashley makes beautiful artistic photographs based off of her lifetime-study of art and love of editorial photography. She has subscribed to magazines all her life, but her favorites have always been Martha Stewart Living (Ashley has subscribed since 1994!), Southern Living, and Better Homes and Gardens. Turning page after page year after year of beautiful craft ideas, food spreads, and luxe interiors has influenced and molded Ashley’s photography into what it is today.

Ashley’s family is a significant influence as well. Her mother always took time to make over-the-top gorgeous holiday food beautiful on pretty platters and service ware. They took time together polishing silver, laying out centerpieces, and making place settings extra special. Ashley’s step-grandmother was a floral designer, which is a huge reason why Ashley loves flowers so much. Memories of the greenhouse and it’s dank earthy smell and the scent of fresh flowers in fresh water will always be a favorite for Ashley. Sometimes her favorite images of a wedding are the flowers!

Ashley’s independent free spirit must come deep in her roots from a long line of free-thinking women. At age 75, her maternal grandmother got her first tattoo! Ashley has yet to get one…likely never will. Love and support from dear friends and supportive family have helped Ashley overcome the challenges of being a businesswoman as well as an artist. The combination is not easy, but hard work has always driven her to do her best and what’s best for her family.

And at the heart of her images there is a foundation of science and technique. There are moments when a breath or a blink of an eye can make or break a shot. Focus and concentration are key and ratios, mathematics, physics and the science of the human eye all come together to create something so lovely and powerful – enough to evoke emotion.
